Letter to Governor

Each quarter I send a letter to the Governor of each state with a report on file and sometimes I'm lucky enough to get a response, many of which are off-the-subject or canned responses.

Each member of LitterButt.com can now print a letter to their Governor and include a list of offenders for the previous month ... the more people that get involved in this the better! It will also allow me to obtain the names of all Governors (I can't keep up with all elections!) as well as addresses and even emails -- so spread the word, start printing and mailing your letters!

I'd like to bring to your attention a common problem faced throughout the United States -- highway litter, most notably the harmful effects of cigarette butt litter. It is estimated that several trillion cigarette butts are littered worldwide every year. That's billions of cigarettes flicked, one at a time, on our sidewalks, beaches, nature trails, gardens, and other public places every single day. In fact, cigarettes are the most littered item in America and the world. Cigarette butts also present a threat to wildlife. Cigarette filters have been found in the stomachs of fish, birds, whales and other marine creatures who mistake them for food. Composed of cellulose acetate, a form of plastic, cigarette butts can persist in the environment as long as other forms of plastic. Highway litter is a costly problem -- annually, Washington State DOT spends $1,250,000 to pick up and dispose of litter statewide alone! We need to find an effective way to educate motorists to the harmful effects of their carelessness and LitterButt.com is a FREE solution I'm offering to states to help report litterers and educate them. LitterButt.com currently partners with Pennsylvania, Texas and North Carolina, transferring the attached reports electronically on a bi-weekly basis. This report is used in conjunction with the D.O.T. to send a letter to the registered owner of the vehicle, describing the incident and explaining the environmental and economical impact of their littering.
